Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest

Johnny Depp is the man all I can say. He totally carried this movie in the wake of the wooden acting skills of his co-actors Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightly though that is not to say I didn’t enjoy the presence of Orlando on screen – beautiful man that he is.

Although a sequel to the 2003 hit you need not really have seen the first or if you did see it you need not really remember much of it. You get the bare basics of the relationships at the beginning but really its all about the new quest. Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) promised long ago to eternally serve Davy Jones, ultimate pirate of the oceans, in the after life. He finds a new way of getting out of this debt – by finding a key that unlocks a chest that contains something (hilariously referred to by Depp as The Thump Thump) that will give you whatever you want. Somehow, Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) and Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley) again get caught up in his quest.

I think this is one of the grossest movies I’ve seen that is not a terror movie. A lot of the action is set on Davy Jones’ ship and it really is creepy, squidgy, grotesque with Davy and his cast being part human but mostly sea life/barnacles. It has to be seen to be believed. The movie I guess is visually stunning and they try to fill it with a lot of action. Depp, as per the first movie, really does provide all the comic foiling.

Overall I guess the movie was okay and it’s a looong one (2 and a half hours) so make sure you have a pit stop first. Its not the greatest and most engrossing movie (though there is a killer cliff-hanger at the end as they did film number two and three together after all) but clearly the 8 year olds in front of us totally enjoyed it.
