One of my New Year Resolution’s (not that I normally have any) was to see more live acts. So last night I managed to catch Supergrass perform at the Arena. The support acts included Melbourne-based band Rocket Science and the Sydney-based The City Lights.
The evening kicked off with a meal at the Valley Corner, a Chinese restaurant that Al has raved about to me for ages. The food was an excellent start to the evening, giving us enough energy to last the frenzied crowd for the rest of the night. Upon arriving at the Arena, we managed to catch the end of The City Lights which was not bad. We then managed to ‘slip’ into the front of the main stage area for the start of Rocket Science which was a pretty awesome act. The leader singer plays the organ/keyboard and some weird instrument that hangs off the top of it which by literally waving his hand nearby it alters the sound it is generating (see below picture).
As the roadies took their time setting the stage for Supergrass, the crowd continued to increase in density. I was pretty happy that most of the people in front of us were all pretty short meaning that we got a pretty good view of the stage even though we were no where near to the front. It wasn’t long until Supergrass started playing and kicked on for a decent set that would have lasted at least an hour and half. They mixed it up with some new, some old, some electric, some acoustic and of course played many songs that everyone seemed to know the lyrics to. So many of their songs were played that I cannot enumerate them all but they were all played extremely well. The only disappointment to the night was probably the aggressive group of people behind us who constantly pushed their way forward during the night. Let’s just say that I was not displeased at all when one of them was thrown out of the venue by security when they started trying to crowd surf. Anyway it was an awesome night and I managed to get some happy snaps.
Agree- awesome night had by all. Nice geeky touch there with “enumerate”.
Man, nice shots too – good work on sneaking the camera in Pat 🙂
Hehe, sounds like a cool gig.
The “bizarre instrument” sounds very much like a Theremin. Chicks on Speed used a Theremin in their live show at the Zoo.
