The Mercedes-Benz World Summer Concert Series

Since I haven’t been to any of the other music festivals this summer, and I didn’t have any on the calendar, when the email for discount tickets to the Mercedes-Benz World Summer Concert Series came into my inbox I thought why not. The line-up didn’t sound too bad with Will Young, The Saturdays, Scouting for Girls, Alexandra Burke and Olly Murs though if I’m honest the only reason I wanted to go was to see Alexandra Burke! and I guess maybe a little part of me wanted to see Will Young, who was the headlining act, too.

It was kind of weird to be going to a car factory/showroom/museum to attend a concert but hey for the most part it worked. There is heaps of space out there and all they really need was stage, lots of porta loos and lots of chairs!

Unfortunately the planning wasn’t that great in terms of placement. We were towards the back and side and we had okay views … when the booze line wasn’t in our way! The alcohol shack was right behind us and because they were so slow the lines often went all the way down the aisles to at least halfway to the stage! Frustrating but at that stage people were up on their chairs and moving around and standing in the aisles to see the performers anyway!

First up on stage was Olly Murs

Then Alexandra Burke

A small break for the self-photos

Rather randomly, as they weren’t on the bill, we had special guests The Wanted. Apparently to make up for the fact that the concert was late starting they had called up to say they were happy to go on and do a couple of numbers!

The Saturdays were full of high energy though a dude with a giant yellow poster kept getting in our way!

And finally Will Young, who was good but unfortunately our concentration was suffering at that stage and we left before he completed his set!

The concert today was a looong afternoon and evening but we had a good time. The crowd was a totally random mix of people from really little kids to really old adults. It was fairly relaxed though queues were ridiculous first for the drink, then for snacks and then for ice cream! Ah well!

iphone 4: would you give up your soul for it?

Just over a week ago, the day I went to Wimbledon actually, the world saw the new iphone4 released. It created mass hysteria and some people had even lined up at the apple store at Regent Street days in advance, camping overnight, of the release.

I’ve never been an apple supporter mainly because I guess I don’t really like to be a follower in terms of trends. However, there’s no doubt that apple products are innovative, smart and a steps ahead of many of its competitors in the market. 2010 is the year that the pull on the iphone4 proved too much for me to resist.

So how to get one?

Next to buying the phone outright from an apple store, o2 pretty much had the exclusive market on the iphone4 availability. They are making it available to o2 customers only for the first month. Hence last week on the morning of the 24th June I rather impulsively found myself in line at my local o2 store at 6.40am in the morning waiting for the 8am opening. I’d actually woken at 5 that morning and just lay in bed waiting thinking that no one would be in line at that time. What a fool I was – when I got to o2 there were at least 30 people in front of me already!

Where I was in the line I was actually guaranteed a phone but unfortunately o2 took forever to process everyone (I think they kept trying to up-sell and, worst of all, people were going in with no idea of what tariff they wanted to go on, which phone they wanted etc.!) The first 4-5 people took over 1.5 hours to process … and considering there were 4-5 serves in the store that was ridiculous.

Four hours later, at 10.30, I had to leave the line to meet my brother to get to Wimbledon. Hilariously everyone around me, even those in line behind me, was like, “No, don’t go”, “You’ve waited so long” etc. It was really nice of everyone – I love the way we all bonded in the queue! Actually, o2 were rather good at keeping us, if not entertained, occupied with free tea/coffee/water from Pret, draws for free tickets to concerts, constant updates on stock etc.

Sadly at the end of that day at least it didn’t result in me getting an iphone 🙁

But there was good-sh news.

o2 were apparently getting stock every day. They’d set up an online live stock system which let you know which stores had stock for the day. To say that I was on it every day every hour would be an understatement. Even though I could have probably waited for the phone after lining up for 4 hours I had a taste for it and I wanted it NOW! Ha ha!

Luckily I had a lot of good o2 stores around me, in particular the store at Westfield which proved to be a minefield for stock. The next day, the Friday, I saw there was stock so, with my manager’s permission I had an early lunch, and headed over. Clearly I wasn’t the only one monitoring the o2 website as when I got there, only 20 or so minutes after the o2 store opened, there was already a long snaking line inside! There were an additional 25 or 30 of us outside (in front of me!) Entertainingly “the bouncer” wouldn’t let us who were outside form a queue – he wanted us to mill around and pretend we weren’t in the queue. So strange!

After about half an hour or 45 minutes a rep came out to tell us that they had run out of 32GB iphones so I cut my losses and left the line .

What followed was a week of checking the o2 website and anxiousness when I was away from the internet. Ha ha! Finally my persistence was awarded and stock came in again today at Westfield. When I got to Westfield it was nearly noon and I was probably about 60th in the line? I guess I should be happy that I was even that, about ten minutes later and another 50 people had joined the line behind me! Thankfully o2 had stepped up their speed of processing and after just under 2.5 hours, and my pocket a whole lot lighter!, I had my hot little iphone4 in my hands.

Ironically I’m not going to get the phone out until I can find an appropriate case for it … heh heh.

14 July 2010 Update

Here is it! My baby!

Wimbledon 2010

Wimbledon has proved to me that You’ve Gotta Be In It To Win It as by some miracle I won tickets in the Wimbledon ballot again! This year I got tickets for the first Thursday of the Championship on Court 1. Pat hasn’t ever visited Wimbledon so I gave him first right of refusal and even though he had to take a day off from work to attend he didn’t hesitate in snapping up my plus one.

Interestingly the Queen must have also heard that I was going today as she made a special effort to attend Wimbledon after 33 yeas of non-attendance! How exciting that I got to see her again after only having seen her at Royal Ascot a couple of weeks ago 😉

I love how in the second picture of the Queen there is some woman who is right up in her face with her camera!

I’m not sure if it’s the extended good weather we’ve had this summer, or the Queen’s visit or even people returning to see the end of what turned out to be the longest match in the world when John Isner defeated Nicolas Mahut 6-4, 3-6, 6-7(7), 7-6(3), 70-68 (it lasted 11 hours, 5 minutes!) but Wimbledon was absolutely heaving this year – people were everywhere and after we saw the Queen and a brief visit to Court 18 to watch a couple of games of Agnieszka Radwanska’s match (number 7 seed) we were very happy to retire to our seats on Court 1 for the rest of the day.

The first match up on Court 1 featured two good looking gals on the women’s tour: Ioana Olaru and, who doesn’t know, Maria Sharapova. I never realised quite how tall Maria is – she simply towered over her opponent.

It was Maria through rather handily in two sets 6-1 6-4.

Next up were two men’s matches. The first between the number six seed Robin Soderling and Marcel Granoller. In a fairly straight-forward match Soderling was though in straight sets.

Then next up was Sam Querrey (the 18th seed) and Ivan Dodig. This match proved to have a bit more fight it in but Pat and I actually got a bit antsy (and hungry) and left before it finished. It was a good tactic as we avoided most of the crowds and were soon sitting in front of a nice rack of ribs for dinner. Mmmm ….

Its a shame we didn’t get to see our own Aussie Sam Stosur play – just on the practice courts …

West End LIVE

West End LIVE is a great annual event to get taster of what’s on the scene in the West End from theatre to musicals to jazz bands and even to museums and galleries. Now in its 6th year it is bigger and more popular than ever. Leicester Square is the central point of the West End so the entire event was centred on the Square. This had its pros (at least you didn’t have to run from venue to venue) and cons (if you don’t get there early enough there’s no chance you’ll get close enough to the stage for a decent view.

The main performances started at noon today but the gates opened before that and people apparently started lining up from at least an hour before hand. Acts were every 15-20 minutes or so.

Actually at one point the area got so crowded that Nic and I ended up separated from each other!

If you don’t mind a bit of pushing and shoving in the crowd, other than the usual people who are always constantly moving there were also quite some vigorous dancers!, it’s a great way to see the showcase of shows on offer at the West End.

Royal Ascot – Part III

Well, we have lost one of our crew for our now annual journey to Royal Ascot for Ladies’ Day – Pauline you were missed! – however that Su Yin happily stepped in this year to join our journey. The start for Royal Ascot went a little off-track when D missed the train we were supposed to catch though he managed to get on to the next one which was only 15 minutes after ours.

The seating and table arrangement had changed a bit when we got to Royal Ascot from last year. It seemed that the fencing had moved forward a bit and they’d added a whole lot more benches but as usual we went for a table which was useful for placing our giant food supplies for the day. Heh heh. They’d also moved the lavs even further away and though there were a lot more toilets than last year they were so far away I could barely be bothered making the trip to them. It also somehow didn’t change the long lines out the front! Hopefully they’ll change that for next year.

We had a really brilliant day weather-wise – mostly warm and always blue skies (last year was fine but quite overcast at times) – which could have explained why there were so many people at Royal Ascot this year. It felt like everyone in London was the races today!

Photo opps were taken at the start when there were less people around, after that it soon got so busy we could barely make our way around.

Race-wise I think Su Yin did the best out of the four of us and was probably the only one to finish in a net positive position. Unlike last year the race results were fairly unpredictable so if you had some money on the bigger odd horses you could have made a bundle.

It was once again a successful and fun day, and also another opportunity to say hi to the queen.

World Cup 2010: Australia versus Germany

I joined a few other aussies at The Green Man in Putney for the Australia v Germany game tonight. Surprisingly, being Putney, there weren’t very many other aussies in the pub – we were surrounded by english, all of whom were hoping Germany would kick our butt! This was not because they didnt like the Aussies but I guess they don’t want to face Germany in the next round (that’s presuming that England do well!)

It was a nice evening and venue to watch the game with a giant TV screen outdoors in a lovely garden setting. I love the way The Green Man has giant jenga, giant connect four and giant chess set!

Unfortunately the match didn’t go Australia’s way with a 4-0 drubbing but I still maintain it was the awful refereeing. If only they hadn’t allowed that first off-side goal …

Elephant Parade

Close friends to random strangers (for some friends kept telling their friends about me and my mission) know that for the last five weeks I have been missioning it around London chasing down … Elephants! This year, for a limited time only, London has been home to nearly 260 elephant statues. Locating and hunting them down has caused tears, injuries to limbs, tearing of hair (from the parents letting their kids climb over the elephants), blisters, and fending off an angry Mickey Mouse it has been so very worth it to hunt down every single one of them.

The Elephant Family is a small charity working to save the Asian elephant from extinction in the wild. The Elephant Parade has previously been in Antwerp, Amsterdam, and Rotterdam though I don’t think it has had such a big impact as is has had in London. If Facebook posts are to be believed (yes I did join their page) people came from all over the world simply for the sole purpose of seeing these elephants. It was a fantastic campaign and I hope it really succeeds in raising the money it needs.

Tracking down these nearly 260 elephants has been quite a journey in the last 5 weeks (pictures were snapped of these jolly creatures on 19 days, with eight different friends, and with miles walked.) I tried to be as strategic as possible to cut down on wasted travel (sometimes even planning events around where the elephants were!) but sometimes the elephants weren’t there when they were supposed to be, or the map changed and the elephants moved, or the elephants were in hospital! On the other hand, sometimes it worked to my advantage too like when the elephant that was supposed to go to Heathrow Terminal 5 ended up sitting at the Paddington train platform instead.

That’s not to say I didn’t enjoy my time elephant hunting. In addition to meeting fellow elephant hunters I really enjoyed trekking around London and visiting places I’d never been to – it was a new way of discovering London that’s for sure. The elephants themselves were also a wonder in their own right. Various artists had volunteered to decorate them and I could go on all day (it would probably take as long as it took me to find them all) about the themes, the smart concepts and just pure inspiration that some of these elephants entailed.

My absolute favourite (and it was very very hard indeed to narrow it down) had to be #255 The City in the Elephant by the BFLS architects – ingeniously they’d put a literal city of elephants inside the elephant! From afar it looks merely like an elephant with bubbles:

But a closer look reveals something altogether unexpected:

My next favourite was maybe #184 The Human Disease by Nathan McKenna. I think it speaks for itself:

One elephant featured my home country:

Some elephants had a lot of bling (with some people even resorting to try and pick that bling off!)

And who doesn’t love cheese:

There were tributes to women:

The monopoly elephant was way impressive:

Finding the small details on the elephants was cool:

Last but not least were all the London themed elephants

The parade, however, was not without controversy. Gerald, initially sitting in a Selfridges window, apparently had something a little adult about the leaves painted on him. Something to do with one of them looking like a lady part! After the first week he was put away before emerging at China White, where you could see him by appointment only. I personally didn’t see what was so offensive about it:

Now I just have to figure out what I’m going to do with the photos of all 258 elephants …

World Cup Comp 2010

Well, unbelievably its that time of the cycle when the World Cup is on again. Whilst I won’t be setting up a separate page for the world cup comp this year cause I don’t seem to have time to even keep this blog updated! I will do a write up any time I have a comment on the world cup and I’ll do a summary of the winners in our comp this year. Look forward to the pics I’ve taken of everyone. Some are real doozies …

Su Yin’s BBB Birthday

I haven’t been to BBB (Beach Blanket Babylon) for over a couple of years now even though its in my neighbourhood! I was glad that Su Yin chose it for her birthday drinks for exactly this reason – so I could stumble home afterwards …

Su Yin has been in London just probably about 18 months or so (not very long at all) but somehow she has amassed a giant number of friends. I met her at the tube at the start of the evening and when we got to BBB we were probably the first to arrive however it wasn’t very long that friend after friend after friend arrived to greet her. Though there was almost a revolving door of people coming to see her with people coming in and going out I don’t think I’d be wrong in saying that between maybe around 8 and 11 she probably had upwards of 30 people around at any one time.

Drinks-wise we had a waitress who looked kind of like Heather Locklear, she was very pretty, but she was very very good at taking orders. Now bearing in mind that there were a lot of, shall we say, people from far east asia here tonight she did well being able to find the owner of whatever drink people had ordered. She even remembered my order from the start of the night to the end of the night (yes I behaved and limited myself to two drinks).

Su Yin very generously put her card as a bar tab. I shudder to think just how large the bill would have been tonight! I saw her tucking money into her top (heh heh) but I doubt what people gave her would have covered it! At any rate it was clear that Su Yin had a wonderful time tonight – Happy Birthday Su Yin!
