Michael’s 30th

Ugh!! I’m getting old. This year is the start of a lot of my friends turning 30. This means its not too far in the distance until I reach that milestone. *Shudder* Well, after last night’s celebration of Elvira’s 30th, today it was Michael’s turn. Michael is the husband of a friend of mine, Connie, whom I’ve known since I was about 4. Mind boggling to think how long we’ve known each other. The venue was The Waterway at Maida Vale.

Connie and Michael had reserved most of the outdoor terrace (and set up an unlimited bar tab! 🙂 ) and after working out the logistics of how to seat all 20 of us we all settled down for a nice afternoon enjoying Pimms and BBQ by the canal. It was a fabulous afternoon for a BBQ get together. Enough cloud cover that we weren’t being killed by the suns rays and temps hovering in the lower 20s – it was perfect. The Waterway is clearly popular on a day like today with the place filling up pretty quickly. The food offerings were pretty nice and tasty, if slightly on the pricey side with a burger (with admittedly yummy chips) cashing in at ÂŁ9.50. My only complaint being that my food was served on the cool side. The drinks menu though is the strength with an extensive selection for all to choose from. Service was attentive and the atmosphere was lively. A nice way to spend a Saturday afternoon.

The Ping Pong Experience – Bayswater Style

The Jasmine TeaSo finally I’ve made my way to this second in the Ping Pong chain of restaurants. I haven’t actually been to a Ping Pong since my visit to the original on Great Marlborough St having thought their yum cha prices a little on the expensive side and their variety of yum cha a little on the light side. So when Andrew suggested this as a venue for Elvira’s 30th birthday dinner I was uncertain how I would find it.

The boys and their chicken feetThe menu doesn’t appear to have changed or developed at all with most of the dishes still being fairly unadventureous although not necessiarly traditional. I tried to convince the group to try one of the more traditional dishes – chicken feet but only the boys were up for the challenge. It probably didn’t help that Andrew had just told us some awful story about chicken feet!

I guess the good thing about Ping Pong is that they have an extensive cocktail and drinks menu and so its almost like going to a bar but you get to have some nice finger food to go with your drinks. We couldn’t complain about the service – it was pretty quick, efficient and friendly and once we had ordered our food it came out quickly and pretty much all together. Of Elvira and her birthday course, this made it a little awkward with the limited table space so its lucky that most of our dishes were stackable. Actually, I was quite impressed with the service as when we asked for candles on some sort of dessert for Elvira they actually went out to a local store and bought some for us!

Clearly the Ping Pong recipe has been quite a successful one thus far with a third in the chain recently opening near Marylebone and with lines constantly going out the door at both the original and the Westbourne Grove branches. I still think the food is overpriced and not varied enough but for simple yum cha and great cocktails – Ping Pong will do.

Maybe its going to be a monthly thing

Relaxing in the bar after our first lessonNot too long ago I wrote about an annual reunion that we seem to have for all the people from my old work place back home who are in London at the right time. Well, today it was another reunion but this time with the addition of a crazy couple who managed to actually score tickets for every Australian (first round) match in the World Cup. They are blowing a lot of money on it but I’m sure they will have an absolute ball.

The venue this time was Lizzie’s (one half of the crazy couple) old drinking hole – the Stanhope Arms. Apparently back when she worked in London a year and a half or two ago she and her then partner in crime, Deb, used to come in every day after work for a cheeky pint. It seems to be an okay pub but was staffed by some quite disinterested bar tenders. Not sure if it was because it was a Sunday but there was definitely no rushing to fill our orders. In true World Cup spirit its been done up with flags all over the place but we noted that Australia’s was missing – not sure I’ll come here to watch an Aussie game then! 🙂

Liverpool take home FA Cup

A win for our side at last! After having Boro lose their last two matches it was nice to finally see a team I was supporting, Liverpool, bring home a win as they took West Ham in today’s FA Cup Final. Although Liverpool was actually favoured to win, West Ham had all the luck on their side. They were staying in the lucky hotel (apparently out of the last 32 finals, 29 winners had stayed at this hotel or something like that) and the lucky locker room.

Sir Jules chose the Angel Walkabout as today’s match watching venue as its his “lucky” venue. I have sworn never to step into a Walkabout but today was an exception. While we were there I thought I might as well take advantage of one of their nicer cocktails – Illusion. I suffered my usual allergic reaction but it really was yummy. 🙂 Actually, as a venue, there was pretty good atmosphere at the Walkabout. I’d say that Liverpool supporters JUST outnumbered West Ham supporters (or they were the most vocal anyway.)

But on to the game. As I said Liverpool did take the match but they didn’t make it easy for themselves. First there was an own goal in the 21st minute and then there was a fumble by the Liverpool keeper that allowed West Ham to score an easy second goal not too long after. With hearts in our mouths the seconds were ticking away just a bit too quickly as we approached half-time but Liverpool were able to scrape at least one back to make it 1-2 going into the break.

The second half started off in a flurry as Gerrard scored the first of two brilliant goals to make it 2-2. West Ham made it 2-3 in answer after a freakish long-range goal by Konchesky. It was heart in the mouth sort of stuff again as we approached the end of the game and then in the 90th minute Gerrard scored his second brilliant goal to take it to extra time. Despite some great football by West Ham in extra time they just couldn’t capitalize on their opportunities and Liverpool were able to hold it to 3-3 to take it to a penalty shoot out. And this is where their class showed taking it 3-1 after some awesome saves by the keeper.

Was Sir Jules happy? It would be fair to say that’s somewhat of an understatement!

Commiserations to losing UEFA finalists Boro

After going to see Whistle Down the Wind, I dropped into the Pint Pot to see how Chicken and Sir Jules were feeling after the UEFA final between Boro and Sevilla. Sadly for Chicken Boro went down to Sevilla 4-0. She wasn’t too happy about that but even knowing as little as I do about football over here I know that Boro’s year was a pretty good one so she can’t be too unhappy about their performance overall. There’s always next year!

Yet another reunion

Almost a year ago there was a reunion of sorts of a group of us from my old work place at home and this now seems to be an annual event on the calendar. Back then there were about 8 or 9 of us and amazingly, even though only 7 of us could make tonights drinks, there are still about the same number of us over here somewhere. In fact the numbers could actually be increasing. The only difference is that about half of us have gone home to be replaced be some newbies. Its actually a pretty good indication of how good the leave opportunities are back home – its not every employer that will let you take a year off knowing full well that there is a greater than 90% chance you won’t come back!

Tonight’s venue was the Porterhouse. Not my favourite venue for finding people (as its a real maze) but once you’re settled its actually pretty cozy and for those into their beer they have some great home brewed ones on tap. It was good to hear from some of the new arrivals and their thoughts on London. I still think its a fab place but its always nice to get someone else’s perspective.

Football at Craven Cottage

Today Sir Jules, Sandra and Steve took me to my first live football game. The day started with a pint at the Larrik at about midday before moving on to the Coat and Badge for a fairly posh Sunday roast (my veges came in a separate bowl for goodness sakes!) and then on to Craven Cottage at about 3 for the game: Fulham vs Middlesbrough. Sandra was the only one out of the four us who really had a team to support (Boro) so a lot of our pre-game talk was on both educating me about the game of football and Sandra making sure we were in full Boro-support mode. Unfortunately, the support wasn’t enough and Boro went down to the home team 1-0 (after a penalty shot late in the second half). But I’m getting ahead of myself.

Craven Cottage, Fulham’s home ground, is so named because of this strange little cottage which occupies one corner of the ground. Its apparently one of the nicer grounds set as it is by the river and near a nice little green which makes your walk to the ground enjoyable, especially on a nice day I imagine, and is a great way to build up some excitement as you walk with the other football fans. I’ve read that the police presence is a little over the top out front but I didn’t mind seeing the giant horses (okay, mounted police on normal sized horses.) Seating approximately 22,000 its also one of the cosier grounds and allows you to feel pretty close to the action.

As for the game itself well I’m not sure it was the most exciting game to be played as it was the last game in this year’s Premiership for both teams and neither really had anything to play for except pride. I think Fulham was pretty much playing its first string team but Boro were definitely not, especially if the numbers on the jerseys were anything to go by (numbers in the 20s-40s), as they were saving their best for Wednesday’s UEFA final. Still, I thought the atmosphere was pretty cool. We were sitting at the neutral end (behind the goal) where I guess most of the Boro supporters were. Sitting behind the goal was great when the action was at our end but not so great when it was up the other end. Despite the general lack of excitement there was enough play and good atmosphere to keep me interested in the game and I think we all enjoyed ourselves … most especially when ribbing Sandra about Boro’s “performance”.

After the game we headed to Wetherspoons for another cheeky pint or two (well, OJ for me) for a post-game analysis (nah – really it was just more of an excuse to drink) before heading to Hare & Tortoise for a quick dinner. Its been a longer day than I thought it would be but I really enjoyed myself. Its no wonder the Brits really like their football! Bring on my next match ….

Darts – A Work Thing

Tonight we had our third in a series of London wide “sporting” events for work. I’ve already written up the first effort in the Bowling. (The second was the netball at which I wasn’t present as I was in Oz at the time but I’m told we did shockingly …) What was tonight’s event? Well, its pretty obvious from the title – it was Darts. It was a very good turn out at Princess Alice Pub near Aldgate East and everyone was in a very competitive (and extremely loud) spirit. It was almost too rowdy to even take pics so the ones below are some from the end of the night when there were only a few of us left:

Overall it was a pretty good night. Although we didn’t win we didn’t come last (and we didn’t have to rely on team numbers to boost our position) which was a nice change!

Mahdi Reunion

It is a week of reunions it seems. Tonight we had a catch up with some people including A (you may be familiar with his extremely whacky comments that he likes to leave on my blog for my reading pleasure) at our favourite Persian restaurant, Mahdi.

Mahdi serves brilliant Persian food and if you go for the specials is fab value (you will not leave the restaurant hungry I can guarantee!) For a while during the back end of 2005 we were going there for lunch practically every couple of days – we liked it that much. However, as with all things, I think we went overboard and as a result this year we have hardly gone at all. I suspect though it probably has something to do with the fact that the number one fan, A, has left our office.

I think a nice night was had by all.
