Russian Reunion

Alsu, our tour leader from our Russian Christmas trip, was in town for a short visit and after some hiccups with last week’s plans we finally got our act together today and met up for a few cocktails and a late afternoon lunch at Loco Locale. It was nice to catch up with her (and the others too of course) even if some of the crew couldn’t make it. Most suprising thing to hear was that one of the guys was going to apply for a Russian visa so he could hop over to Moscow at every chance – ah, what we do for love!

So, Loco Locale wasn’t bad in terms of their cocktails (the espresso martini was delish and at half-price who is going to say no to a cocktail or four) and the actual food was pretty good (portions seemed gigantic and reasonably priced) and it is a pretty cool room. The only negative was the service which was relatively slow and quite awful in delivery (drinks were brought to the wrong people and carelessly spilled at times) and waitresses (or maybe it was just one in particular) had the worst timing often interrupting conversations to ask inane questions. Still, overall, it wasn’t bad at managing our relatively large group and even though we were there for nearly 4 hours didn’t put any pressure on us to leave … perhaps it was the number of cocktails we were ordering …

Bloomsbury Bowling

Take a car park in Central London, renovate it with 8 bowling lanes, a pool table or two, a lounge area and giant bar and you’ve got yourself a nice little money maker. Of course change “car park in Central London” to ” private Pacific island in northern Fiji” and you could be mistaken for Mel Gibson.

So last night we had had the first of a number of London wide “sporting” (used very loosely here) events for work at Bloomsbury Bowling (netball, darts, rounders etc. to follow.) It was actually a pretty decent turn out with about 60-70 of us gamely pulling on the ever so classy bowling shoes to take turns knocking down the pins although I think people spent more time at the bar than in the lanes! It was definitely up for debate whether imbibing in alcohol actually makes you perform better but if our score was any indication I’d say the answer was no!

I think a good time was had by all. Unfortunately we must have been having too good a time as we ended up second last on bowling averages! Oh well – its all about playing the game isn’t it? Not winning …?

Night out at Edgware Road

Tonight was kind of a night out to celebrate our surviving the stress of the last few months. Sadly not all of the team could make it, however those of us who did manage to make it more than made up for their absence.

Continuing on with our current favoured Middle-Eastern-themed-eating, A and A number two had jointly chosen Mawal at Edgware Road as our destination. When we first arrived the lighting was shall we say romantic. It was not intentional however as we soon found out that electricity was at that moment in time strictly at a premium! It was slightly troubling as at first the wine was delivered unchilled, secondly my juice couldn’t be blended and finally food was served luke-warm. Service it seemed was also at a premium though strangely A number two’s more quiet hand in the air was more effective than A’s call for service. After this initial hiccup, and when we had finally filled our bellies, we settled in to enjoy the rest of the evening.

Overall it was a nice evening and a pleasant change from the usual Friday night drinks. For once it was nice not to be constantly shouting through the roar of the crowd and feeling the obligation to keep your glass full. Instead we exchanged the usual beers and spirits for a bit of wine, mint tea and shisha. Shisha was interesting for me and although now I cannot claim never to have smoked in my life I guess I can technically say I haven’t smoked the more obnoxiuos cigarettes. Shisha (also known as hookah, waterpipe, or even hubble-bubble) is basically the use of a water pipe to inhale a mixture of tobacco and some sweet substance such as apple, strawberry, melon etc. The mixture is heated using lit coals. A number two and S tried to explain how it worked to me but all I really needed to know was to take a pull through the hose. Anyway, however it works, it was an interesting experience. The night was topped off by some live entertainment by some very smartly dressed men who could have been pop stars for all we knew! Great night.

Night out with Kiss Kiss Bang Bang and Bar Soho

Tonight saw a reunion of the team that took Leeds by storm. M had arranged a full night of entertainment for D and myself, including a stop for dinner at Belgo Centraal, a bit of Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (ooo la la) and some drinks at Bar Soho.

Belgo Centraal is one of a chain of Belgian-themed restaurants. If you’re interested in a cheaper meal its worth trying to beat the clock (that is, get your order in before 6.30) with select meals being priced at the time of order accompanied by a free beer (or softdrink). The atmosphere is definitely pumping with the low ceilings giving it a cosy beer cellar feel. Service was efficient and food was delivered quickly. The food itself is pretty good and I was stuffed after my half chicken and very generous portion of frites. A great place to catch up with friends.

Bar Soho

The stoned floor, wood timber walls and candle-lit tables give the main room a very relaxed feel. Tonight it was buzzing and the music was great. The company was great. The only negatives was the over priced drinks (I guess that is Central London for you) and the bar service with attitude (must go with the media-types that tend to frequent this bar.) Otherwise an okay bar for its ambience and music. Beware of the potential for high cover charges.

Happy Birthday little bro

Birthday greetings to my little bro. Tonight he celebrated his first birthday in London with a night out at AKA. I’d never been to AKA but I think its sister club located next door The End – an apparently world-renowned nightclub as L tells me – is quite the popular hang out. Tonight was GAY night at The End and its patrons also spilled over into AKA.

AKA is a pretty cool place with lots of seating in a split level room and because the music and noise doesn’t start in until about 8.30-9.00 you can catch up with your friends and save shouting yourself hoarse until later in the evening.

My bro knows an amazing number of people already and he had friends come in from all over including Oxford! I think he had a good night and did well flitting betwen all the various groups (high school friends, uni friends, exchange friends, work friends, friends of friends, room mates etc.) Photos are here.

Just another nice Sunday …

You’ll notice that in a lot of my posts over the English summer I am going to be commenting on the weather as appropriate so xif it starts to get a little old – too bad. : P

Today it started off rather gray but, as this English summer is want to do, by the end of the day the clouds had cleared and the R & Csun was soon beating down upon us (at 6pm I even managed to get a slight sunburn! Unfortunately on the same side I was unconsciously cultivating a tan on when I was at Wimbledon earlier this week.) R and C were both doing the Race For Life run at Richmond Park today. It was a nice 5km run that was over in minutes it seemed. I think I wore myself out with my job as chief-bag-look-afterer and girl-who-must-laze-around-whilst-1000s-are-running-miles. R and C were well pleased with their times considering neither had been able to train for the few weeks before.

After the run, we headed off for a late lunch at Wimbledon village. My main motivation was hoping to see some tennis players in their civvies. And I did!! Woohoo – first cab off the rank was Lindsay Davenport. She was with family so I was a bit reluctant, and as ever too shy, to ask for a photo. Later on when we were digging in to our pizzas Svetlana Kuznetzova and another unknown blonde-haired female player walked by. I was happy with my “star-sighting” fill.

Hello Wimbledon!!

I entered the ballot this year thinking that I had a reasonable chance of getting tickets. Yea right – what a fantasy that was. So today, on the third day of the Championship, at about 2pm I found myself lining up with R and about a billion other people trying to get into the grounds.

Our first sighting of the groundsThe weather today couldn’t have been more pleasant and aside from the uneven tanning I got from always facing one direction the queuing wasn’t all that bad and soon enough, after not quite 3 hours of waiting, we found ourselves inside Wimbledon. I felt giddy with excitement. Seriously – I did.

We, or more likely I, had been studying the order of play for the day while waiting in line so at least we had a clue which matches we were up for. Unfortunately for us a lot of the matches were completed fairly routinely today so it wasn’t worth the effort of trying to get Centre Court or Court 1 resale tickets. We ended up moving around a bit to see as many different matches as possible:

– Court 18: Xavier MalisseFernando Gonzalez v Tomas Zib
– Court 19: Xavier Malisse/Olivier Rochus v Gilles Muller/Christophe Rochus
– Court 14: Mario Ancic (Little Goran) v Danai Udomchoke (could barely see for all the people crowded around this court)
– Court 13: Feliciano Lopez (Babe!!)/Rafael Nadal (Baby!!) v Tomas Cibulec/David Rikl
– Court 4: Mikhail Youzhny v Jean-Rene Lisnard (only a snipet)
– Court 3: Gael Monfils v Dominik Hrbaty
– Court 2: Florian Mayer v Fernando Verdasco

and finally we made it to Court 1! Some extremely nice ladies were leaving and gave us their tickets. They were very good seats only a few rows back from the court. As for the match – we had the privilege of watching Martina Navratilova (still playing at Ever young Martina and partner48 years young!!) playing doubles with Anna-Lena Groenefeld against Rika Fujiwara and Saori Obata. An entertaining match and an absolute delight to see Martina enjoying her tennis so much.

The day was not completely over at this stage as it was still bright and sunny when we left Court 1 at maybe 7.45 in the evening. Greg Rusedski was involved in a thriller on Centre Court against Joachim Johansson so we headed to Henman Hill, or Murray Field, or Rusedski’s Ridge or whatever you want to call it to see the match on the big screen. I had promised myself that I R and I on the Hillwouldn’t go to Wimbledon just to sit on this hill but, with a glass of Pimms in hand, sit we did. It was actually quite enjoyable – when we weren’t struggling to try and keep our seat that is (the slope is surprisingly steep.) Of course, in the end Rusedski lost the match but he did keep us entertained until dusk.

Overall it was a great day and I think it would even be worth camping overnight to get in a whole day’s play next year … maybe. Probably. Definitely.

See the photos here.

Reunion of sorts

Tonight I met up with some (say about 8 or 9) people from my old workplace back home. I shouldn’t be surprised that there are so many of us over here, London being the wonderful city that it is. We always seem to say we’ll stay in touch and catch up but, not too strangely, everyone gets on with their life and it is often 6 months (at least) before we meet up again. So tonight’s meet at Waxy O’Connor’s was a good chance to catch up on what was going in everyone’s lives. It was a good night.

On a side note would you believe that I got carded!! That’s pretty flattering. The guy at the door had a hard time believing my date of birth. We had a good giggle after he saw it.

Work Christmas Do

My patch at work had their Christmas do today. It was definitely an interesting education in Christmas the Audit Commission way. After a surprisingly entertaing 2 hour session of quizzes (which, not that I’m gloating, my team won!) it was off to Hogs Head for a quick round of drinks (or two) before a lunch at La Rueda. I’m not sure who chose Spanish for lunch but the food was good (and plentiful) and we left at about 4 stuffed beyond comprehension. Then it was off to Mash for more drinks (we had to get through the drink kitty after all) and then on to yet another pub, Porterhouse, where it appeared other Audit Commission patches had taken up residence. To say we had overtaken and conquered was an understatement. Some of the more eager partied on until late into the night (or early morning) – very strong fortitudes indeed.
