The Sea Inside

The story of a quadriplegic fighting for his legal right to die was not as depressing as I thought it would be. As with Kim Cattral’s character in the play Whose Life Is It Anyway?, Javier Bardem’s Ramon is a strong-minded quick-witted quadriplegic who just wants to “die with dignity”.

Yes there were some tears shed for the inevitable finale, but overall what I felt was respect for the humour displayed by Ramon. The film is less about the right and wrongs of euthanasia and more about the relationships and the impact on the people involved in such a situation.

Overall, the acting was genuine and heart-felt and cinematically the scenes were memorable (seascape scenes were gorgeous though I could have done without the scenes of the cause of Ramon’s disability). It all made for an enjoyable film.
