Sequels are always tough and this is acknowledged by the movie itself within the first few minutes. John Travolta returns as Chili Palmer, former shylock for the mob turned film producer, in this sequel to the popular “Get Shorty”. This time around he takes a spin in the record industry. Joining him for the ride are Uma Thurman (love interest), Christina Milian as, yep you guessed it, the up and coming rising music star, Vince Vaughn as her manager Raji (a Jewish white boy black-person-wannabe) and The Rock (yeah baby!) as Vaughn’s gay, tough guy, body guard Elliot Wilhelm.
The story is nothing special – some convoluted plot that involves a rival music label, Russian mobsters, and ganster rappers – it felt like a mere vehicle to deliver to the screen some of the most hilarious individual characters I’ve seen in a while. Vince Vaughn can always make me laugh but The Rock was surprisingly entertaining – check out his country and western video. Dang – he is the bomb and for me the stand out in the film.
