This one’s a keeper. Read the book and saw the 1971 version of this movie so long ago that I didn’t have anything to make comparisons to so I could look at this version with fresh eyes and what I saw I really liked.
That Johnny Depp sure is a funny guy. Okay the movie is nutty and very on the wierd side but that is what makes it the wonderfully quirky movie that it is. Depp was absolutely charming as is Freddie Highmore as charlie.
The only thing that got a bit on the boring side were the overlong performances by the Oompa Loompas (lyrics taken directly from the book but each performance based in different styles ruch as rock, dance etc.) – but its part of the story so what can you do. Oh and there were strange flashbacks to Wonka’s childhood that is used to explain his current eccentricities that interrupted the flow a bit.
Overall, a fantastic movie and one to be savoured.
