.. or is it?
This is the third and supposedly last instalment in the X-Men 3 franchise so there were a lot of loose ends to tie up … namely killing of a few of the original cast and replacing them with new. But I’m getting slightly ahead of myself here. As per the two previous X-Men movies The Last Stand attemps to tackle the big themes of discrimination and alienation and the new theme of pro-choice. This time there is a “cure” to make mutants “normal”. Clinics open for mutants to come in for the cure. Scenes of hysteria (and protesting ala abortion-clinic protesting) and indignation on behalf of Charles Xavier and Magneto follow. Also on the side you have the resurrection of Jean Grey, who died in X-Men 2, as the freakish Phoenix. One of the larger stories in the comic books her emergence as Phoenix seems to be tacked on as a filler rather than a main story.
And I think that’s the problem with this movie. Although you have these underlying themes and the chance to have real character development there is so much going on and so many characters to get used to that you never really connect with any one character. As a result all you’re left with is what is effectively a montage of each character and an example of their mutant power but without any character development. I guess if that’s what you’re looking for then you will be pleased. Purely on entertainment value I would definitely rate this movie as it has great action scenes (there is definitely a lot of death and carnage in this one) and nice use of CGI. You’ll just have to get over worrying about the logic of it all and try not to cringe at some of the cornier moments.
HINT: I’m not sure if it applies for the UK screening but I’ve heard that you should stay after the credits as there is an extra scene which … well I wouldn’t want to spoil anything … but it relates to the question I raised above.
Hi there
I’m a friend of Julian and I really like reading about all your “adventures”.
This comment is not related to X-Men (sorry) but seeing as you seem like the kind of girl who likes to do fun stuff, may I recommend going to see a specific South African band performing in London soon?
They’re a young, up and coming group of musicians from Cape Town (yeh) called Freshly Ground and they make quite “unique” alternative African music. I feel it is my patriotic duty to spread the word. 🙂 Plus, you’ll get to experience a bit of South African culture (other than the ahr-ahr rugby-watching, lager-guzzling, bbq-ing SA working holidaymakers) in England.
I’ll send Julian the details and you can see if you feel up to it.
No pressure 😉
And very cool site!

Hi Anita. Thanks very much for our feedback. I’m glad you like reading about my “adventures”. Well done for carrying out your patriotic duty in putting out the word on Freshly Ground. I’ll check with Jules about Freshly Ground and see if its my kind of music. Haven’t really done the music scene in London yet so it might be a good opportunity to start.
