Its just as well that the plot for this movie version of the 80’s classic was relatively simple so it wasn’t necessary to understand anything that most of the characters said. I don’t know if its my ears but I had hard time in particular understanding the mumbling coming out of Colin Farrell’s mouth for at least the first hour and I’m sure there was all this cop-code speak which made it even more difficult to work out what the heck characters were saying.
I’d heard from reviews that this was darker than the TV series – and it was, most of the scenes were shot against a thundery stormy Miami. But in essence the movie remained the same – two too-cool-for-school (undercover) cops driving flashy cars and boats, flying planes, taking crazy risks etc. against a tropical setting.
The story is thus: Colin and Jamie pose as drug transporters intent on taking down a white-supremist group who, with inside intel, had managed to always stay ahead of all other investigative agencies: FBI, DEA etc. Along the way they find bigger fish, a drug baron, nibbling on their line and of course Colin falls for the drug baron’s girlfriend. A betrayal in the midst leads to a giant shoot-out. I won’t give away the ending but its fair to say that the initial set up (the leak within the cop ranks, then the drug baron) gets forgotten and is never resolved.
Overall the movie is very stylish but a movie cannot succeed on style alone. The plot fails, the actors often looked confused/worried, the movie was filled with more pregnant pauses/gazes than a year’s episodes of Bold and the Beautiful, and the narrative almost gibberish. Watch this purely for the visuals (watch out for some awesomely violent scenes) because I certainly didn’t get much satisfaction from the story.
Hi Grace
I saw Miami Vice a couple of Saturdays ago at Southbank.
I thought the movie wasn’t too bad, although not great.
There were times where I felt lost & those times, I would think “hhmmm, where
is this going?”
Good cars, though. I wish I could have the one that Colin & Jamie drove.
But some things are too good to wish for & beyond my current means, eh!
Oh well, trust that u are well.
It’s almost midnite now & I’d better get going, or else i won’t be able to
work properly tomorrow 😉
If you liked the cars in Miami Vice what about the ones in Fast & the Furious: Tokyo Drift. I wouldn’t say no to any of those cars that’s for sure!
Things are well thanks!
