Transformers

Its impossible not to be entertained by a movie with such witty conversation as:

Frenzy: Allspark located.
Starscream: This is Starscream: All Decepticons mobilize.
Barricade: Barricade en-route…
Devastator: Devastator reporting…
Bonecrusher: Bonescrusher rolling…
Blackout: Blackout incoming… All hail Megatron!

and

Optimus Prime: It’s you and me, Megatron.
Megatron: No, it’s just me, Prime.
Optimus Prime: At the end of this day, one shall stand, one shall fall!
Megatron: You still fight for the weak! That is why you lose!

Are you feeling it yet?

This movie is the latest of a line of movies cashing in on the top franchises of our childhood. No doubt anyone who has grown up in the last 25 years or so will have had a Transformer at some stage of their life and if you haven’t – I’m sorry 🙂

Transformers the movie brings to the big screen the battle of good (Autobots) and evil (Decepticons) to earth. Wanton destruction naturally follows. The basic story is that there is some amazing cube, the Allspark, that is hidden on earth and the Decepticons led by the crazy Megatron want it. It is up to the Autobots to stop them and along the way hopefully save earth from Megatron’s evil clutches. There are lots of “human” heroes too including Shia LaBeouf as Sam Witwicky (love that name) who holds the map to the cube, his romantic interest Mikaela played by Megan Fox, lots of army dudes including Josh Duhamel (dreamy) and a couple of geeks including the Aussie Rachael Taylor (hotter than the romantic interest!)

Special effects aside, an Oscar contender Transformers is not but what it lacks in depth it more than makes up for it with the action (lots and lots and lots of action), comedy, heart (yes I cried when Bumblebee was captured and then again when his legs were cut off!) and fun. And oh boy there is plenty of cheese including the mention-worthy moment of Sam slipping in the “you’re more than meets the eye” slogan when he is talking to Mikaela. But you can’t blame the writers for slipping that moment in.

The only disappointment to me was that some of the CGI was so complex and over the top that sometimes you couldn’t tell what was going on – just that it looked like a lot of, well, transforming was going on. Otherwise this is a great summer blockbuster!

  1. Am looking forward to watching this myself. I already know it will be awesome. For those that remember them, the Generation 1 Transformer toys were the best! I still have 3 of them (Starscream, Optimus Prime and Jazz)… ahhhhh good times.

  2. Great movie – saw this 1 week before Simspons Movie. Absolutely superb – although I must say the fighting scenes between the robots happen super fast, it took me a while to figure out “OK, that one’s Starscream, that one’s Jazz”…
But great great. None of my friends who watched it had anything bad to say about the movie.
Of course, personally, Transformers G1 is still the best. Wat u think, eh?
