9 July 2006. So, now we know the Italians have won the World Cup for the fourth time ever. You had to feel a bit for France because of the two teams they were the ones that were going for it – unfortunately they just couldn’t convert their opportunities.
As a result, this is how Sir Jule’s World Cup Comp ended up:
Winning the World Cup
Runner Up
Best Goal Difference (see table below for final goal difference rankings)
Golden Boot
All round abysmal performance
4 July 2006. Unbelievably Italy has pulled one out of the bag yet again. Well, there is no doubt that all those Italians out there are happy if the car honking and shouts are any indication. I’m fairly sure someone let off some fireworks too.
3 July 2006. Not that I’m a sore loser or anything but I’m not liking how this World Cup has turned out. Not only did Australia suffer a heartbreaking loss in their match against Italy to be eliminated from the World Cup last week, this was then followed by England facing similar heartbreak over the weekend losing in the quarters to Portugal and then to top it all off both my remaining teams (Brazil and Ukraine) have been eliminated. Not much interest in the comp now with four teams who I really don’t want to win. If there is anyone I’m going to support I guess its Germany who, despite their bad history with England, have I think shown the most class out of the four remaining teams. I guess I’m hoping France get runner up as no way do I want Italy to get through and Portugal – well, bad sportsmanship much? Note the table below has not been updated.
20 June 2006 update. Some interesting results in the last couple of days. Ukraine turning around their 4-0 defeat with a 4-0 win of their own has done my net goal wonders. I’m still far from the front of the pack but I’m not the wooden spooner anymore. There have been some changes at the top of the table with Sir Jules now on top with Sol, Suresh having dropped down to a lowly 4th. 🙂 It will be interesting to see how Argentina go tomorrow against Holland.
17 June 2006 update. A lot was made of the fact that I received Brazil as my 1st seeded team, followed by the Czech Rep as my 2nd seeded team. Sol in particular has been giving me grief about having it made for our competition (and who is it that is on top at the moment!!!)
Unfortunately, results so far have been absolutely awful for me with two of my teams, Ukraine and Serbia and Montenegro, giving away an awful 10 goals between them. This has also been compounded by the Czech Rep going down against unlikely victors Ghana today 2-0. That’s 18 (net) goals I have to score just to overhaul Sol and Suresh’s current net totals! Now I’m in an awful position of having to hope that Brazil kick Australia’s butt tomorrow just to get my net goal position up! As of right now I think I’m actually in the woooden spoon position based on net goals, something Chicken thought she had a strangle-hold on with her Mexico-Japan-Poland-Costa Rica combination. *Sigh*
